Translating the Quran
1.With you group read through the old English version of your Quran chapter. Look up words in the dictionary and discuss. Make sure you understand what every word and sentence means. I will give you a quiz on your Quran chapter and ask you to define difficult words and explain difficult sentences. So make sure you and your group understand the entire chapter!
2. Paraphrase the sentences into your own words. You may also consult alternate translations (you can look them up online.)
3. With your group create a rap-poem version of your chapter. Your poem should be catchy, rhythmic, and rhyming. Your poem should be easy to understand. And your poem must represent the meaning of the original chapter.
4. Arabic Qurans are decorated with non-representational art (decorative, geometric borders) Read the “Calligraphy” and “Masjid” sections on the Muhammad (pbuh) website. Then find some images online nonrepresentational Muslim art. To find images you can search for these terms: (arabic patterns, arabic designs, islamic calligraphy, islamic geometry, arabic tiles)
5. Use an ipad art-writing-annotation app (I used neu-Annotate, but you can use any app you want.) and create a decorated page with Muslim art borders and your rap poem. See my example below:
6. After you have finished your Quran page you may make your recording. Your recording must have four parts intermixed: 1. A recording of your rap translation. 2. A recording of your verse in its original Arabic (try youtube.) 3. A chant or your Arabic "word". 4. And a beat (you may make one with an app or download an instrumental). Mix these four parts with some audio editing app (mix them by playing and rerecording them from multiple iPads). Send me your final audio track!
